Basement mold and mildew is a common problem in basements. Because of the room’s close proximity to the damp ground and the high possibility of water seepage from outside, most homeowners have to battle against damp basement which can eventually grow molds. While mold growth may be something that has always been in your basement, that doesn’t mean it’s okay to leave mold and mildew hanging around. Mold and mildew can spread quickly. Not only do they eat up and grown on whatever they can in your basement, they are also detrimental to your family’s health. It’s only important that you get rid of them as soon as possible.

The obvious solution to basement mold and mildew is to clean affected areas. Always keep in mind though that each time you do some cleaning, you should also try to prevent mold and mildew from coming back.

Before cleaning, inspect all areas of your basement, particularly the perimeter walls. Also check the carpeting as this is a major area where black mold and mildew can grow. Inspect above the ceiling parts as well for any wood pilings that carry mold stains and mildew. If they do, employ a natural cleaning solvent that will eliminate mold stains and encase the wood portion. Make sure you seal the AC vents to prevent freeing mold spores.

The cleaning method mentioned earlier is just a quick solution to eliminating basement mold and mildew. Always remember though that dealing with mold and mildew in the basement has a lot to do with taking preventative steps. The major causes of mold and mildew include lack of ventilation and high levels of humidity. So in this case you should try to work on proper ventilation and install the appropriate devices such as heating and cooling systems to keep humidity levels in check.
